Summer School

One of the activities that the Law and Society Committee has been eagerly taking up every year is the conducting of the “summer school”. Initially conceived for the summer holidays, the name has stuck, despite the shift in time.

The summer school involves a number of enthusiastic volunteers from law school visiting a school in the vicinity and conducting classes in extra-curricular activities. This year the summer school is back with a bang at the Nagarbhavi Government Higher Primary School, with classes in theatre, art, music and dance. A bunch of energetic souls have taken up the task of teaching naughty but keen ten-year olds skills in these areas.

We are running into the third week of classes and nearing completion. The kids who chose music lessons are busy rehearsing their songs for the performance on the occasion of Human Rights Day on December 10th, 2010 at the quad in NLSIU. Bodhisatta Biswas, Deepika Kinhal and Rujutha Kadam, the dedicated volunteers, are ensuring that their tunes are on track and the melodies are nearing perfection. Tasneem Deo had chipped in by conducting a session.

The dance team, powered by Ashwini Obulesh, Meera Sreekumar and Protiti Roy, is engaged in learning moves to the tune of “Chanda Suraj” from the album Gurus of Peace. A peek into the classroom will reveal the passion with which they teach and the equal fervor with which the kids are trying to learn.

The art and craft session, headed by Akanksha Singh, Shweta Kumar and Anumita Chakrabarti have been busy (and quite successfully!) bringing out the Monets and Picassos in the ten year olds. Susmit Paul, Shruthi Naik, Janhavi Venkatram, Supriya Vaishnavi, Rinchen Youdon, Rashmi Naik, Amshula Prakash, Swati Chandra, Neha Rajpurohit and Astha Bhandari also volunteered and helped out a great deal.

Theatre has been a source of fun and learning for the kids with role playing, rapid dialogue deliveries and scenes with a potential for a multitude of emotions. The brains behind this effort include Navaneeth V. Nair, Manasa Sundarraman and Meghna Srinivas, each of whom must be appreciated for handling the kids with panache. Sahana also pitched in one day and the kids absolutely loved her class!

Stay alert for updates which will be coming soon. We would also love it if you could come to watch the kids perform as well as to cheer them on the evening of December 10th in the quad. :)
